FAQs
Hidden First Field
How much does it cost to change a lock on a security door?
It can cost anywhere between $30 and $300 to change the locks on a door. This will depend on a range of factors such as the brand of lock and the type of door. It also depends if you require the service to be done after hours or on an emergency basis. You will also need to factor in the cost of cutting and copying new keys for your new lock.
How do you fix a lock on a security door?
If your door lock is jammed, you can fix it in only a few minutes depending on the underlying cause. If, however, the fast fixes don’t work, you’ll need to call a locksmith.
Some of the quick solutions to fix your security door locks include:
- Dowse your lock in kerosene for 24 hours (if it isn’t attached to a door and is rusted closed).
- Cover your key with graphite or spray graphite into the keyhole. The graphite will act as a lubricant. INsert the key into the hole and jiggle if it does not open.
- If your lock is jammed by a broken key, buy a key extractor. Spray lubricant into the keyhole and insert the barbed side of the extractor so its teeth face the teeth of the key. Move the extractor up and down until you feel it hook onto the key.
- Then, tug the extractor away from the lock to remove the key.
What are the types of security locks?
There are a variety of types of security locks including:

Can you change locks on security doors?
Yes, you can. You can change the locks on the security doors by either completely replacing the locks or rekeying them.
Replacing means literally removing the whole lock infrastructure from the door (including the handle if necessary) and installing a brand new lock as a replacement.
Rekeying a door lock is more common, and it involves realigning the pins and springs in the inner mechanism of the lock to match the new key. This is much more affordable than replacing the whole lock.
Can a deadbolt lock be repaired?
Yes, a deadlock bolt can be repaired. If it is jammed, there are a few steps you’ll need ot o to take.
- Spray graphite into the lock to lubricate it. Insert the key inside the lock and twist it back and forth to free it.
- Tap the lock with a small hammer while you turn the key. You can also use the end of a screwdriver to do this. This should create wriggle room inside the lock and allow stuck parts to loosen and become free.
- Then take the lock apart, and open the door once the deadbolt is freed. File done the inner strike plate of the lock with a metal file to open it a little more, allowing the deadbolt to slide freely into place when closed.
